Comedy, Ash and Concrete

Now Reykjavík has a new mayor.... Comedian Jon Gnarr took over the keys of the city today after his comedy party won the local elections two weeks ago... People claim they are tired of how things have been run and want new blood into politics.....

I hope the new party will take the problems of the city seriously and will be open to solutions and alternative actions!

In the meantime...ash blows from the Eyjafjallajökull area and colours the city even more grey......
Local and foreign scientists + engineers are now researching if the ash can be used in production of cement.... .... welcome GREEN CONCRETE!

Very relevant in a country where almost everything is built out concrete!

and some pics from my sisters balcony......

  1. hey olafia,
this post is important i think, the green concrete and the ashes... as your sister's balcony i suppose your sites and everything else is covered in gray ash?
from before you have the question of ACCESS to the sites formerly occupied by profit, now you have the question of (CLEAN UP) TRACES - how you propose to do this becomes important: what is removed? added? how can people/events leave traces, making history visible, who does it? - this could stimulate the required thought processes for your SLOW ARCHITECTURE. there is a poetic potential here. i remember something you said in our first conversation - about making a beautiful site by the water involving steam or smth like that. in a way i think now you are in a position to approach your project by employing your real strengths: how to analyze a situation (each site and its qualities) how to tell a story and create new narratives (with architectural solutions to ACCESS and creation of contemplative/social/community/green etc POCKETS/EXPERIENCES/SITUATIONS. v

  2. This was a very helpful comment.

I have already narrowed my sites down to five potential ones and site one (the one by the sea) is one of them. Looks like it might be three main ones in the end.

Depends on what I´d like to work with and where to implement it.

Andddd... :) I have organized sites and models so everything is starting to come together now... but yet a long long way to go.
